Ulcers are lesions of the skin characterized by a loss of tissue integrity involving disruption or death thereof. Characterized by a bright red, defined, erythematous macular lesion. Once formed the ulcer heals very slowly. Scarring can not only be painful but if not treated properly, can have negative consequences for cosmetic self-image and also increase the risk of secondary infection. In all these healing processes the presence of cytokines and growth factors that act as mediators regulating the process is vital.
